Alabama’s Senate has just approved the most draconian move against abortion to pass US legislature this year - outlawing it in almost all circumstances and threatening doctors with a century in prison for carrying out a termination.

How has this happened in 2019 - and what is next?

The legislation must still be signed by the state governor, but her support is expected. It follows a raft of other state level enactments, such as that in Georgia, against abortion - known as foetal heartbeat bills - banning it from around six weeks of pregnancy when cardiac activity can be detected. This is before many women even know they are pregnant.
