Fr. Nikolaos Kakavelakis, the Greek Orthodox priest who was shot outside his church in Lyon, France, on Saturday, has successfully undergone surgery and is “doing well,” a family contact told Greek City Times yesterday.

The priest was shot twice in the stomach by an unknown assailant while locking up at the Greek Orthodox Church of Annunciation and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The story has been surrounded by quickly-spreading information, with several rounds of reports that Fr. Nikolaos has died. It was also initially reported that Father was the victim of a terror attack, although police believe it was more likely a personal confrontation.

It was also reported that the man who was taken into custody by police (and subsequently released) was a former monk who had a longstanding personal feud with the priest, although Greek City Times and other outlets have clarified that the suspect was not a parishioner, but a local homeless man who was taken to a psychiatric clinic after investigations.
